Greatest Wimbledon Finals - Ladies

Greatest Wimbledon Finals - Ladies

Wimbledon is home to one of sport’s most iconic competitions, and has served up some impressive memories over the years.

The women’s game has produced some fantastic players, with Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Venus and Serena Williams just some of the names that have made the Wimbledon Ladies singles such a competitive and exciting spectacle.

But when finals day arrives, it takes a great player to lift the coveted ‘Venus Rosewater Dish’.

Here are some of the greatest finals the Ladies Championship has ever seen.

Virginia Wade v Betty Stove-1977

Although it’s 76 years since Fred Perry won the championship, it isn’t the last time Britain had a singles champion.

The UK’s last singles success came in the Jubilee year of 1977, when Virginia Wade beat the 7 th seed Betty Stove 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

It could’ve been an all-England final, that’s if the Dutch Stove hadn’t beaten 4 th seed, and future Television star Sue Barker in the semis.

This was Wade’s 16th attempt at Wimbledon and fell on the 100th anniversary of the Championships.

Ivanovic happy with Wimbledon Move

Ivanovic happy with Wimbledon Move

A few days ago it was announced that starting in 2015 Wimbledon will start one week later meaning that there will be 3 weeks between the French Open and the Championships instead of just 2.

The move will allow players an extra week to adapt between clay and grass.

When asked about this date change, Ivanovic gave a ringing endorsement of the move.

"I think it's great," she said. "There aren't many things I would change in tennis but this is definitely something I have always supported, so I'm happy to see that it's happening, and I think the vast majority of players will support it.

"To go from the slowest surface to the fastest, in just a week, sometimes less, is very tough and this will obviously give us more time to adapt, and maybe even to play an extra grass event."

Wimbledon Date Change for 2015

Wimbledon Date Change for 2015

The All England Club today confirmed that The Championships’ dates will be moved back by one week in 2015.

Wimbledon 2015 will run from Monday 29 June to Sunday 12 July.

“The best interests of tennis will be served by allowing the players more time to recuperate and to adjust from the clay of Roland Garros to the grass at Wimbledon. All our research indicates that there is widespread support within the game for extending the gap between the French Open and Wimbledon and, importantly, we think most players will welcome the prospect of a longer grass court season and spending more time on the softer surface of grass." Philip Brook, Chairman of the All England Club, said.

“In making this change from 2015 we recognise that there will be some important consequences for the overall tennis calendar and enough time needs to be given to allow us all to plan accordingly. In anticipation of the work required, I would like to thank our colleagues throughout the game for their enthusiasm and support for the vision of a tennis calendar that will better suit the needs of the modern day sport.” He added.

So now tennis players will have 3 weeks to get ready for Wimbledon instead of 2. Not much but something is something.

Venus and Serena win Wimbledon doubles title

Venus and Serena win Wimbledon doubles title

Serena Williams and sister Venus beat Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-5, 6-4 to win the doubles title at Wimbledon.

It was their fifth Wimbledon doubles title together, and came shortly after Venus watched her little sister win the singles final.

"I was definitely inspired by Serena's singles performance," Venus said. "Obviously it's wonderful to play on the court with her. I couldn't have done it without her, so it's great."

Both sisters have battled health issues over the last two years, with Venus having been diagnosed with an energy-sapping illness and Serena overcoming blood clots in her lungs and two operations after cutting her feet on glass in 2010.

Serena Williams wins 5th Wimbledon title

Serena Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title after beating Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

"It's been an unbelievable journey for me," said Williams. "I feel amazing out there. This whole tournament I felt really great physically. So I think it's definitely the beginning of something great. I hope it is."

After hitting a backhand winner on match point, she fell onto her back to the grass. She then rose with a grin as big sister Venus smiled and applauded, along with the rest of the crowd.

After shaking hands with Radwanska, Williams climbed into the box where her family was seated. She hugged her father, Venus, their mother and others.

"I think when you go through a lot of tough things you just kind of let down your guard a little bit and just be yourself," Williams said. "I love being me. I'm a normal person. I like it when people get to see that side of me."

Radwanska will play Wimbledon final despite illness

Radwanska will play Wimbledon final despite illness

Agnieszka Radwanska insists she will be fit to face Serena Williams in Wimbledon's final despite suffering breathing problems on Friday which caused her to cancel a scheduled news conference.

"Unfortunately I have picked up upper respiratory illness, it's affecting my nose and throat," she said.

"I have been playing a lot of matches here in the rain and cold wind, and I haven’t been well for a few days. The most important thing is that I’m feeling good on the court and playing some good tennis, despite not being able to talk much away from the court.

"I will do whatever it takes to make sure I’m ready to play the best I can," added the Pole, who withdrew from her scheduled doubles third round match in midweek where she was playing with sister Urszula.

Serena into 7th Wimbledon final with win over Azarenka

Serena into 7th Wimbledon final with win over Azarenka

Serena Williams reached her seventh Wimbledon final hitting 24 aces to beat Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 7-6.

The final point of the match was, fittingly, the record-breaking ace.

"I've been working so hard, and I really, I really wanted it," said Williams. "I got a little tight in the second set. I couldn't relax. I was like, looking too far in the future and she came back. But I'm glad I was able to get through."

Williams controlled the play against Azarenka in the first set with her service game, winning 20 of the 24 points she started. She then went up an early break in the second set, but Azarenka responded to make it 3-3.

They held the rest of the way, and Williams picked up her final three aces in the tiebreaker.

Serena and Venus into Wimbledon doubles semis

lSerena and Venus into Wimbledon doubles semis

Serena Williams and sister Venus secure a spot in the semifinals of the Wimbledon doubles after defeating Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears 6-1, 6-1.

Venus and Serena will next play Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.

Serena beat Victoria Azarenka in straight sets earlier Thursday to move one win away from her fifth Wimbledon title. Venus was eliminated in the first round of the singles tournament.

With Venus' health situation in mind, Serena said another doubles title "would be so awesome."

Radwanska reaches Wimbledon final for the first time

Radwanska reaches Wimbledon final for the first time

Agnieszka Radwanska beat Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4 and advanced for the first time to the Wimbledon final.

"This is a dream from when I was kid," Radwanska said. "I'm playing tennis almost 18 years, and of course everybody's dream is to play the final of a Grand Slam."

Radwanska will face Serena Williams, who upset Victoria Azarenka.

The Pole and Kerber started well but soon started to show their nerves.

Each held at love in their opening service games, but Kerber broke for a 2-1 lead when Radwanska's backhand drop shot went wide.

"We both were a bit nervous in the beginning," Radwanska said. "Of course this is the semifinals, so you really want to try your best, but sometimes too much, and your hands a little bit shaking.

"After a couple of games, I just relaxed a little bit. I was really focusing on every point."

Radwanska held to 3-2 and then won the next four games to take the set.

In the second set, Radwanska converted her third of three break points in the match to take a 3-2 lead and held the rest of the way.

Kerber finished with 26 winners, six more than Radwanska, but had 14 unforced errors.

"I'm so happy, it's amazing. I played very good today," Radwanska said.

"It's always tough against Angie. We are very good friends but of course on court we were both fighting for the final." She Added.

Kerber conceded she could have few complaints about the result.

"She played very well today. I gave my best, but she was better," Kerber said. "I was maybe one or two steps slower. I think that made the difference.

"My plan was to be aggressive, but she moved very well and didn't make many mistakes, so it was really tough."

But Kerber, ranked 100th this time last year, was still satisfied after reaching a Grand Slam semi-final for just the second time.

"Actually it was a great tournament for me. I'm in the semis here in Wimbledon. Sure, I'm a little bit disappointed, but it's ok," she added.
