Serena, Sam and Vera winners on day 2 in Charleston

Stosur beat Jamie Hampton 6-0, 7-5, Zvonareva cruised past Kateryna Bondarenko 6-1, 6-1, and Serena Williams was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Elena Vesnina.

Serena, playing this tournament for the first time since she took the title four years ago.

"I forgot I hadn't played on clay in so long, but that's so true," Williams said. "I really love the clay. I feel like it suits my game. I don't have to go crazy and move my feet so much. And it's no different from hard or grass - I should be able to play the same and do the same, if not better, because I have more time."

The 11th ace actually came at the most critical time - match point. "I pretty much just go for my serve and do the best I can, so I'm glad I'm getting some aces," Williams commented. "It really helps to get a free point. Especially on the last point, you definitely want to hit an ace. It's a lot easier - believe me."

Vera Zvonareva Interview at Indian Wells 2012

Vera Zvonareva Interview at Indian Wells 2012

Vera Zvonareva beat Kimiko Date-Krumm in the second round at Indian Wells and was interviewed after her match....

In 2009, you had a memorable performance here in Indian Wells, winning both the singles and doubles titles. Take us through that tournament for us…
That was definitely a great experience for me. I remember watching it on TV when I was younger. I think that it was an incredible achievement. Once you win an event like this, it is always in your memories, and a special tournament to come back to. I’m excited to be back here as there are only a few players who have won this event. So it’s great to be among them and see yourself on the posters around the grounds. It’s a cool feeling.

How do you think your style of play fits in with the tournament conditions, such as the wind and the temperature changes?
It doesn’t bother me too much. I can get adjusted pretty quickly. I like the atmosphere here, which is very important. We always have great crowds and it’s nice to see so many people support us. Whatever’s happening on the court, I’m able to adjust pretty easily.

Zvonareva easily advances in Baku Cup

Zvonareva easily advances in Baku Cup

Vera Zvonareva reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 Baku Cup whhen Kristina Kucova retired with a left leg injury.

Zvonareva was leading 6-0, 3-0 when Kucova quit. Although she was playing with the lower part of her left leg heavily taped, she ran well in rallies but made little headway against a more powerful opponent.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Elena Bovina 6-4, 6-0 while Kateryna Bondarenko beat Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-1, 6-4.

Bovina broke her opponent for 2-0. Having pocketed her next service game she held a break point for 4-0, but when that opportunity was relinquished the tone of the match changed dramatically.

Pavlyuchenkova fought back - drawing level at 4-4, breaking serve for 5-4 and closing out the opener to love on her own delivery. She was even more dominant in the second set, losing just nine points on her way to a 64 60 victory - and a quarterfinal showdown with Galina Voskoboeva.

Anna Tatishvili also advanced to the quarterfinals, edging Tatia Mikadze 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Wimbledon: Zvonareva survives scare to beat Riske

Wimbledon: Zvonareva survives scare to beat Riske

Vera Zvonareva defeated Alison Riske 6-0 3-6 6-3 in the first round at Wimbledon.

Next for the 2010 finalist will be Elena Vesnina, who came through 6-4, 6-3 against Laura Pous-Tio. .

The Russian won the first set in 25 minutes but Riske fought back in the second, clinching her first game with a strong volley. At two games apiece the American mustered her fastest serves of the match to power two aces past Zvonareva.

Vera then gifted Riske a break and put her ahead at 4-2. Serving for the set, nerves seemed to get the better of Riske, who mis-threw the ball twice before double faulting. But she soon overcame them, securing the set after Zvonareva netted a return.

Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, Zvonareva continued to struggle in the decider with Riske, sensing the chance of a major upset, quickly breaking back to keep the game tally level until 3-3.

Zvonareva broke ahead at 5-3 and cruised through the final game to polish the match off with an ace which Riske did not even attempt to return.

“I’m really happy I was able to pull it off in the end,” Zvonareva said. “She played some good tennis but I tried to stay focused. I had some ups and downs but I’m really happy.

“I lost my concentration for a bit but I always fight for every point and I was able to pick it up in the third set”.
