Williams Sisters Confirm Fed Cup Commitment

Williams Sisters Confirm Fed Cup Commitment

Williams Sisters Confirm Fed Cup Commitment

Serena and Venus Williams have renewed their commitment to the Fed Cup after the pair confirmed they will play for team USA against Sweden later this month.

The team also includes world number 16, Sloane Stephens, and number 27, Varvara Lepchenko, meaning the US is a far stronger outfit from the one that lost 3-2 to Italy in round one last February.

That defeat cast the US into a World Group playoff and they must be on form if they are to overcome Sweden on the weekend of 20 April.

Surviving the dreaded playoffs is a difficult ask for any team but with the Williams sisters set to come on board, Betfair pundits are backing them heavily to overcome Sweden.

Venus Williams beat Serena 64 75 during an exhibition match in Nigerian where she even showed her dance moves with a pop song.

"For me to get a win against Serena, it means 2013 is going to be a great year," Venus said.

In a very hot day, Venus appeared loose during play and also playfully teased her sister.

Serena grew frustrated with her play. She batted a tennis ball against the back wall in anger at one point and cried out over poor volleys.

Several times, she stopped to kneel on the clay and press her head against her tennis racket. At one point, she did a double-take and laughed when she saw a man holding up a sign that read: "I am the Nigerian husband Serena never had."

"We've worked so hard this year; Venus has worked so hard," Serena said. "We hope to keep this momentum going into next year."

Clijsters to play farewell match against Venus Williams

Kim Clijsters, who retired from tennis after the U.S. Open, will play a ceremonial farewell match on December 12th against Venus Williams.

Clijsters announced on her website that she will face her longtime rival in the Kim's Thank You Games at the Antwerp Sports Palace in front of 13000 fans.

Venus Williams: "This is a very special moment for me. I was in Antwerp already at the first edition of the Diamond Games in 2002. I'm always very happy to play here, the audience is incredible. It is an honour to be able to play against Kim in her last match. I am really looking forward to it and am very pleased with the invitation! "

For Bob Verbeeck, organizer of Kim's Thank You Games, Venus is the perfect adversary for Kim: "Over the years Venus has contributed largely to the success of the Diamond Games, through her tennis and her victories, but also through her personality. Venus joined the Diamond Games right from the start, at the start of Kim's breakthrough too. We could not have hoped for a more symbolic goodbye for Kim."

Venus Williams wins Luxembourg Open title

Venus Williams wins Luxembourg Open title

Venus Williams beat Monica Niculescu 6-2, 6-3 to win the Luxembourg Open title.

Williams played steady tennis while Niculescu proved error-prone as she sought her first career title.

Throughout the 1-hour, 22-minute match, Williams rarely looked in trouble, taking the early initiative and never letting go.

Venus was very solid in her backcourt game as Niculescu looked hesitant from the start and failed to get any momentum going.

"I had to work so hard to get to the final - the match against Andrea was so challenging, and the two matches before as well, and even my first round I had to stay really focused," Williams said. "Monica was in her second final here so she obviously feels really good on this court. You have to hit five, six, seven shots more than usual. It can be frustrating. She's tricky. You have to be ready."

Venus Williams reached the Luxembourg Open final after defeating Andrea Petkovic 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Williams will play Monica Niculescu, who beat Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 6-3.

Petkovic kept up with Williams until 4-4 in the final set. Then she dropped her serve and Williams closed out the match in 2 hours, 38 minutes.

"She's such a tough opponent - I just had to keep fighting," Williams said. "She was playing so well and attacking all the time, and the only thing you can do in a match like that is just try to win more points than your opponent - that's all I tried to do, just keep coming back, coming back, and winning more points."

"This was the first tournament since I came back that I felt like the old Andrea Petkovic," Petko said. "That's very important for me because I was doubting myself the last few weeks. I feel better about my game now; I feel like I can get back to the high level I had again."

"I was playing with some problems at the Open - it was difficult to serve, and that's a huge part of my game," Williams said about her back injury. "But I have worked really hard to be able to be here, and I came planning to put some good serves in the box.

Washington win 2nd straight WTT title

Washington win 2nd straight WTT title

Venus Williams beat Coco Vandeweghe in a last-game tiebreaker as the Kastles completed their second straight championship WTT season with a 20-19 victory over Sacramento.

Williams, who was named the WTT finals MVP, felt fit, confident and ready to dig in and do whatever it took to succeed.

"I really felt like I came out on fire in all my matches," said Williams.

Williams and teammate Anastasia Rodionova won the women's doubles match to put Washington in front 8-6. After Sacramento took the men's doubles match to lead 11-10, Williams and Leander Paes won the mixed doubles competition in a last-game tiebreaker and sent the championship into a final women's singles showdown tied at 15-games apiece.

Vandeweghe broke Williams' serve to lead 3-2, but Williams broke right back and the match eventually went to the WTT's best-of-9 point, super tiebreaker. Vandeweghe quickly led 2-0 when Washington called time out. Paes jogged over talk with Venus.

"I just told her she's one of the greatest of all time," Paes said. "Go have fun and hit your shots."

The, Williams won five points to set up match point. Vandeweghe sent a final forehand long to start Washington's celebration.

"You know, a lot of the times it comes down to missing one opportunity on a three-all point," Vandeweghe said. "That's what makes it fun to play World Team Tennis. Winning those opportunities is more fun than losing them."

Williams has struggled to find the singles but she's taken satisfaction, she says, in succeeding in group ventures.

"It's my first World Team Tennis title in 12 years," she said. "It's amazing."

The WTT typically wraps up in midsummer after a three-week long season. This time, organizers pushed it to September because of the Olympic tennis competition and the U.S. Open.

Paes said the team was out of synch on Saturday night as it rallied to defeat the New York Sportimes and John McEnroe for the Eastern Conference finals.

He never doubted his club would end on top.

"We find solutions. We always have in my four seasons here," said Paes.

Williams was grateful for the victory and excited about what's she's accomplished, both on and off the tennis court.

"''This whole year's been a fight," Williams said. "But for me, the year's been incredibly successful because of what I've been up against."

Venus Williams 1st Round US Open Interview | Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Venus Williams 1st Round US Open Interview | Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Q. The crowd was definitely feeling you with lots of love, you played well, looked good. I think what's amazing about your game is your fearless attack to the net. Do you think that is because of your doubles game that you play with your sister all the time or are you playing fearless, period?

VENUS WILLIAMS: I think my game is just an attacking game. I like being at the net, so I don't mind coming in. I feel good up there. I think the doubles actually helps when you get up there to be able to volley a little bit. More than anything, I just feel good.

Q. Can you remember the last time you played a tennis tournament in which you weren't coping with some health issue?

VENUS WILLIAMS: No (laughter). But everybody has their lot in life, and I've had mine. I've had an unbelievable lot. I'm living my dream every day for the last 15 years, so I can't complain.

Q. Did you learn how to cope with things, learn that you have to play with pain, learn that you should not play a certain week, rather than try to force the issue? Is this something that comes with maturity?

VENUS WILLIAMS: For a player like me, I play through everything. So I think for maturity, there comes a point when you have to start realizing you can't play through everything. For me that's been just about a year, year and a half that I've finally gotten smart. For me it's about living life with no regrets. If I have any small chance to hit the ball, I'm going to go for it.
