Bartoli must improve before French Open

Bartoli must improve before French Open

Marion Bartoli is staring at an early exit from Roland Garros if she doesn’t improve this month after the world number 14 crashed out of the Portugal Open first round on Tuesday.

Expectations are high for Bartoli to impress at the French Open yet this defeat at the hands of Shuai Peng means her preparations for the Grand Slam are in tatters.

Bartoli suffered a major crisis of consistency over the three-set match as she lost the opener to love before hitting back with a strong set of her own. Unfortunately, despite clawing her way back into the match a final set break meant a 6-0 1-6 6-4 exit for Bartoli, who now has little clay preparation heading into Madrid next week.

Bartoli reaches Carlsbad semis, Jankovic upset

Marion Bartolibeat Christina McHale 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to move into the semi-finals of the WTA Carlsbad.

Bartoli cut down her double-faults from a massive 18 the previous night to 11 against McHale.

"I really don't know why it's happening," she said of the faulty serve. "But it's hurting my whole motion. Maybe I'm not jumping as high as I'm able to do when I'm on my best.

"When you're going through those kind of patches you have to find a way somehow, that's obviously a good sign for me."

"I thought after I got the first set, if I could keep the pressure on, I could go through in two," Bartoli said. "But my serve let me down in second and I decided to focus on that shot first. I started to serve better. I was winning my serve easier and then I was able to put pressure on her serve and that was the turning point."

Pic of the Day: Bartoli and Serena meet Pete Sampras in Stanford

Pic of the Day: Bartoli and Serena meet Pete Sampras in Stanford

Serena Williams and Marion BArtoli met Pete Sampras this week in Stanford... The Frenchwoman even had the chance to hit with Sampras, making her dream come true.

"Today when I arrived on site and got out of my car, Pete was just arriving. I told him it was perfect timing," Bartoli said. "It was really cool to play with him. I come from a small village of 1,000 people back in France and it was always my childhood dream to hit some tennis balls with Pete Sampras. I had no idea it would happen 21 years later here in Stanford, but life can be like that.

"I was so stressed at the beginning I could barely hold my racquet. It was just incredible - an extreme pleasure and honor. I was like a kid. I never dreamed about winning a Grand Slam, just about playing with Pete. I had posters of him all over my bedroom. He was my all-time hero. I'm just so, so, so happy.

"My mom was always a huge fan of Andre Agassi, so whenever they were playing against each other we were cheering for different sides, obviously. And whenever Pete would lose I'd be depressed for a week, crying in my bedroom!

"He would never overact on court. He was very much the same person on and off the court. The way he was loyal to his family and his coaches, the way he cried on court against Jim Courier at the Australian Open, that's the kind of person I like. He was the greatest champion. I just liked him and no one else!"

Vandeweghe beat Urszula Radwanska 64 64 and made it into her first semifinal on the WTA Tour.

"I was pretty mad about losing in the last round in qualifying," Vandeweghe said, who got in as a lucky loser. "I had the match on my racquet and didn't play well on that day - of course you can't play well every day. But I seem to be doing a pretty good job of picking myself back up and putting a lot of good matches together these days.

Tennis Quotes: Bartoli from Brussels

Marion Bartoli met the press before the Brussels Open tennis tournament check out what he said...

On how she's feeling coming into this week...
"I feel great. I've been recovering from being sick. I had an illness in Madrid and Rome. I'm feeling a lot better physically now, and I have a lot more energy. I've been practicing well and I'm looking forward to starting my tournament here."

On the waffles and chocolate at the tournament...
"The rumors are true, I've had some! It's hard, they bake them here in the club, and when you see everyone having one you're like, 'I have to taste it!' I'm also a huge fan of sweets and anything with chocolate, so it's hard to resist. But when I had it it was only after a very hard practice! It was kind of my reward."
