Maria Sharapova is the Highest-Paid Female Athlete in the World

2012 French Open champion, Maria Sharapova, came on top of the new Forbes "World's Highest-Paid Athletes List" today.

The Russian is the only woman to make the top 50, bringing in $27.9 million ($5.9 million on tennis tournaments, and $22 million in endorsements). Masha is ranked number 26th.

Sharapova earns much more off the court than on it, thanks to deals with Evian, Head, Nike, Samsung and Tag Heuer.
Sales for the Maria Sharapova Collection, her line of products at Nike subsidiary Cole Haan, doubled last year.

Her ballet flat is the best selling female shoe and very soon she will have her own candy company called Sugarpova.

The only other woman on the list is fellow tennis player Li Na with a total of $18.4 million in earnings .

Masha is a proud Russian

Masha is a proud Russian

Maria Sharapova, who will carry the Russian flag during the 2012 London Olympics ceremony, wants everyone to know that she is proud of her roots and that no matter for how long she has lived in the US she will always be Russian.

Check out what she said to TennisHead:

“Everyone knows my story of being born in Russia and moving to the United States at seven,” she said. “People didn’t criticise me but they would say: ‘She’s Russian but she’s living in the United States.’ When the flag [went up at Roland Garros] and I heard the national anthem, I was so proud to be a Russian. I’m so proud to represent my country.

“I never thought for a second that it would be otherwise, no matter how many people told me: ‘You’re not, you just have a passport.’ I couldn’t care less. I love where I’m from. I don’t live there because of the circumstances, but all my family is there, the culture and the feeling. It’s what’s inside, not what’s outside, that determines that.”

Maria Sharapova could be Russia's Olympic flag-bearer

Masha´s great momentum continues... As today we learned that Sharapova could be the Russian's flag-bearer at the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony in London.

Carrying the flag is considered a great honour in Russia and, until now, it was given only to famous athletes, mostly men.

Shamil Tarpishchev, Russia's tennis federation chief, earlier said that Sharapova had already been confirmed as the flag-bearer but Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said: "Maria is an outstanding athlete but currently she's just a candidate for the role of the country's flag-bearer."

The minister added that the flag-bearer would be officially named after the NOC executive committee meeting on July 10-11.

Sharapova Roland Garros Final Press Conference | June 9th 2012

Maria Sharapova Roland Garros Final Press Conference | June 9th 2012

Q. You’ve dominated this match as you have dominated the whole tournament. How were you feeling today? How were you feeling just after the match point?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, it’s surreal. It’s the most unique moment I’ve experienced in my career. I never thought I would have that. I thought that when I won Wimbledon at 17, I thought that would be the most treasured moment of my career.

But when I fell down on my knees today I realized that this was extremely special, and even more so. Yeah.

Q. Achieving the Grand Slam, big four, and when you think that even people like Nastase, Sampras, Rosewall, so many big names even in men’s tennis couldn’t achieve. When you look back to the start of your career and today, maybe one of your happiest days, how do you envision the trip between the beginning of your career and today, the Grand Slam?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, it’s a long journey. It started from a very young age. It’s not over yet, you know. I’m not sitting here and saying I’m done, because I’m far from it.

I have a lot more in me to achieve. I believe in my game. I think that’s one of the reasons that that’s why I’m sitting here with my fourth one and winning Roland Garros, is because I always believed I could be better, I could be a better player, whether it was on clay, whether it was on grass, whether it was on cement, anything, I always strive to be better.

Maria Sharapova wins Roland Garros 2012 Title

Maria Sharapova defeated Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2 to win the 2012 Roland Garros title.

Sharapova jumped to a quick 4-0 lead against Errani, who was in her first Grand Slam final.

But Errani battled back turning what looked like a blowout into an 89-minute endurance contest, filled with long rallies that forced Sharapova to reach back and find another gear. Eventually, Sharapova's bigger serve and bigger groundstrokes wore down Errani.

When Errani netted a short backhand on the third match point, Sharapova dropped gingerly to her knees and buried her head in her hands, then reached back and looked heavenward - a long, hard journey back to the top finally capped with the only major title that had eluded her.

She won on the red clay of Roland Garros about three years after dropping as low as 126th in the rankings after shoulder surgery that threatened her career. She rededicated herself to the game and made a special effort to improve on clay, where she improved to 18-1 in matches this year.
