Kaia Kanepi pulls out of Olympic Games

Kaia Kanepi pulls out of Olympic Games

We have very sad news today for all Estonian tennis fans, as Kaia Kanepi pulled out of the London 2012 Olympic Games due to a heel injury.

Kanepi played for her country at the 2004 Athens Olympics and in 2008 in Beijing and was hopping to do it again this year but she was not able to recover in time.

The annoucement was made on her website saying:
"An ultrasound examination showed yesterday that Kaias heels have not recovered as fast as hoped and she has to withdraw from London Olympic Games. Dr. Madis Rahu said that increasing the practice intensity now, will eventually lead to even longer injury break.

Kaia's own words: "It is very sad that I cannot participate in the Olympics. I do not know if I will ever get another chance to participate in the Olympic Games. At the moment all I want is my legs to be ok and that I could play tennis without feeling any pain”" it said.

At the age of 27 this could have been her last Olympic Games so it is very sad to see she will not be there.

Kaia Kanep Roland Garros Press Conference | Quarterfinals | June 6th 2012

Q. Just your impressions of the match? Seemed like she was hitting a lot of lines and really attacking your serve.

KAIA KANEPI: Yeah, I think she played very well. Yeah, she was attacking all the time, and I didn’t have much time to do my shots. She played very well.

Q. On your own serve did you feel like you didn’t serve well or she was just returning very well? I think you got broken seven times.

KAIA KANEPI: Yeah, she puts the pressure on when she returns. It’s not very comfortable to serve because you know you have to serve well.

Q. So just talk about how did you feel out there? Were you in a rhythm? Did you find the conditions difficult?

KAIA KANEPI: No, I think conditions were okay. I was just very nervous in the beginning, and it got some time to get used to it.

The Russian second seed fired a series of winners, each accompanied by her habitual shrieks, to break her opponent's serve seven times.

"I am happy to be back in the semi-finals. I love coming back here to challenge myself to go further in the tournament," said Sharapova.

"I won two tournaments coming into Paris in Stuttgart and Rome and they gave me a lot of confidence. But every event is different. I am just happy to improve and I know it'll get tougher from here."

Clijsters vs Kvitova at Open Gaz de France final

Clijsters vs Kvitova at Open Gaz de France final

Kim Clijsters beat Kaia Kanepi 6-1, 7-5 to reach the Open Gaz de France final.

Clijsters will play Petra Kvitova, who defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-2, 6-0.

Clijsters has won both her previous meetings with Kvitova in straight sets.

Clijsters raced into a 4-0 lead before Kanepi finally won a game.

The US Open champion dropped her serve three times in the second set where she trailed 4-2 and 5-4 with Kanepi even serving to level the match.

After saving the first two match points, Kanepi then hit a backhand return into the net. Kanepi lost her serve seven times in a match lasting 1 hour, 20 minutes.

“I played aggressive, went for the line and tried to make her move,” Clijsters said.

“She made a lot more unforced errors, really wasn’t playing as aggressive as I thought she would,” Clijsters said. “She was not making her first serves quite as much, that gave me more advantages at the start of the rally.”

“I didn’t serve quite as well, and she started going for it a bit more, tried to keep the rallies a bit shorter,” Clijsters said.

About her final opponent the Belgian said:
“(Kvitova) always likes to play forward, she has this easy hit, very deep as well. Over the last few months she’s been able to stay a little more consistent,” Clijsters said. “When I played her at the U.S. Open, she was really on (form) three games in a row … (opening) up the court with that slice out wide with the serve.

“But then she could also make so many unforced errors and rush into it.”

Kvitova broke Mattek-Sands’ serve three times in each set and wrapped up her victory in just 59 minutes.

“I played my best match of the week. I was focused on every point,” Kvitova said. “I was in the final in Brisbane, but this is a bigger final and I’m looking forward to it.”

“I don’t think I will be stressed, because she is the best player (and I have) nothing to lose,” Kvitova said about playing Clijsters.
