Serena, Sam and Vera winners on day 2 in Charleston

Samantha Stosur, Vera Zvonareva, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Serena Williams made into the third round at the Family Circle Cup today.

Stosur beat Jamie Hampton 6-0, 7-5, Zvonareva cruised past Kateryna Bondarenko 6-1, 6-1, and Serena Williams was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Elena Vesnina.

Serena, playing this tournament for the first time since she took the title four years ago.

"I forgot I hadn't played on clay in so long, but that's so true," Williams said. "I really love the clay. I feel like it suits my game. I don't have to go crazy and move my feet so much. And it's no different from hard or grass - I should be able to play the same and do the same, if not better, because I have more time."

The 11th ace actually came at the most critical time - match point. "I pretty much just go for my serve and do the best I can, so I'm glad I'm getting some aces," Williams commented. "It really helps to get a free point. Especially on the last point, you definitely want to hit an ace. It's a lot easier - believe me."

Venus Williams advances at Family Circle Cup

Venus Williams defeated Iveta Benesova 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round at the Family Circle Cup.

“This is great for me to be in another match and to be in the second round,” said Williams. “It was a good start.”

She said she takes a lot of ice baths and after she was eliminated in Miami she took three days off just to rest.

“For me it’s just about having energy at this point. I try not to worry about tomorrow,” although she said she is thinking about the Olympics and getting her ranking up.

Ormaechea, Voegele and Wozniacki winners on day 1 at Family Circle Cup

Paula Ormaechea upset No.15 seed Chanelle Scheepers 61 16 64 to advance to the second round at the 2012 Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

Ormaechea, who make it into the main draw after getting through the qualy, led 5-1 in the third set, her opponent won three games to close to 5-4, but the Argentine broke at love to seal the win.

Stefanie Voegele defeated No.16 seed Jarmila Gajdosova, 64 26 64, while Aleksandra Wozniak needed almost three hours to beat No.11 seed Christina McHale, 75 57 64.

"Overall it was a good match. Aleksandra played some really good tennis," McHale said. "She was serving really well and I found it hard to break her. I had my chances in the match, but I just couldn't capitalize on them."

Radwanska withdraws from Charleston

Agnieszka Radwanska withdrew from Charleston with a back injury, just a day after winning the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open title with a victory over Maria Sharapova.

"We're as disappointed as our fans to lose our top seed, and we wish Agnieszka a quick recovery," said Bob Moran, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director.

A revised draw reflecting the change left fifth-ranked Samantha Stosur, the second seed, as the highest-ranked player in the field of the $740,000 event.

According to WTA rules, Marion Bartoli, was inserted in the top slot of the draw, with Serena Williams being put into the slot originally occupied by Bartoli.
