Serena Williams beat Nicole Gibbs 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the Bank of the West in Stanford.

Gibbs double-faulted on her first serve and then seemed to regain her composure and played a number of strong points the rest of the way.

Williams said it took some time to adjust to the different conditions between Wimbledon grass and California hard court.

In other matches, Yanina Wickmayer defeated Heather Watson 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 and Chanelle Scheepers topped Michelle Larcher De Brito 6-3, 6-4.

Serena Williams wins Bank of the West Classic 2011 title in Stanford

Serena Williams defeated Marion Bartoli 7-5, 6-1 to win the Bank of the West Classic 2011 title in Stanford.

Bartoli was up a break two times in the opening set but Williams was able to get those breaks back on her way to take the lead.

The American went ahead 5-0 in the second and never looked back.

This is Serena´s first title since her comeback to tennis. Williams mowed down the competition with relative ease, including a 6-1, 6-3 thumping of Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals.

The American was calm and cool behind Bartoli’s go-for-broke shots and second serve topping 100 mph, having a harder time with the elements.

Williams was broken in the third game of the match and eventually went down 4-2.

She then saved two break points and moved back to 4-3. Bartoli broke back and served for the set at 5-4, first requesting a trainer to deal with a blister on her right hand.

After a long rally on set point for Williams, somebody in the crowd yelled “out” while Bartoli returned a ball from the baseline. The French woman kept playing before hitting the next ball into the net to give Williams the set.

Bartoli argued unsuccessfully with the chair umpire to replay the point, and she requested a trainer between sets.

The Frenchwoman was broken in the second game of the second set and allowed Williams to go up 5-0 with easy.

“I haven’t won a tournament in forever that wasn’t a grand slam so it’s cool,” said Williams.

“I put a lot of work into this week. I want to take this whole (hardcourt) swing serious. It’s a good time for me.”

“I knew before the match that it would be different from Wimbledon,” said Bartoli, who suffered a bone bruise on her hand.

“I managed to play well until my hand was disturbed, but that doesn’t take anything away from Serena who played really well.”

“I never lose hope in my serve,” said Williams, who unleashed 11 aces in the match. “Sometimes it doesn’t show up, but I keep hitting it.

“I have an opportunity to be healthy and be here that I’m so grateful,” added the American

Serena Williams storms into WTA Stanford final, face Bartoli next

Serena Williams storms into WTA Stanford final, face Bartoli next

Serena Williams defeated Sabine Lisicki 61 62 to moved into the final of the Bank of the West Classic.

Williams, ranked 169th, will next play Marion Bartoli, who advanced when Dominika Cibulkova withdrew because of a strained abdominal muscle.

“I feel like a kid again,” Williams said. “When I was younger I had the goal of being in the top 100, then qualifying for a Grand Slam without a wild card. I have those goals again.”

“She should be fresh and I will be ready,” Williams said about Bartoli. “It’s a whole new match and I’m a better player than I was at Wimbledon. This is great progress and I’m excited about my potential as I go forward.”

Lisicki played tight in the first set, which fed into Williams’ aggressive attack.

“I have never played her before so I did not know what to expect,” Lisicki said. “I’m not used to having the ball come back at me so hard. It was a new experience, a learning experience.”

Williams was able to stay away from making too many mistakes, enabling her to play a strong ground game.

“I have to be more consistent and I want to make fewer mistakes,” Williams said. “I was trying to go for the shots when it’s right.”

“I came out not playing well,” Lisicki said. “The important part for me was starting to play better in the second set. I don’t know when the comeback ends. I just want to keep going.”

Bartoli reaches Stanford Final after Cibulkova pulls out with an injury

Bartoli reaches Stanford Final after Cibulkova pulls out with an injury

It was announced a few moments ago that Dominika Cibulkova pulled out of her semifinals match against Marion Bartoli.

The Bank of the West Classic commented on their facebook page that Cibulkova suffered an abdonimal strain.

"Dominika Cibulkova has been forced to withdraw from the Bank of the West Classic due to a left abdonimal strain and will be unable to play in today's semifinal match vs. Marion Bartoli. Bartoli will now advance to the 2011 Bank of the West Classic final for the third time in four years."

Cibulkova said the injury has been bothering her all week.

“It was painful when I played Marina (Erakovic), but I was able to get through that match,” she said. “I thought it would be better in the morning, but I saw a doctor and he recommended not playing since the injury could worsen.”

Cibulkova had the same problem earlier in the year, missing two tournaments after getting through the quarterfinal at Madrid.

“Maybe I rushed to play too quick,” she said. “I don’t want to make the same mistake.”

Cibulkova still plans to travel to San Diego, where she is scheduled to play Wednesday.

“It’s still open and I’m hoping to be ready,” she said. “I still have things to do in San Diego.”

Serena cruises past Sharapova at Stanford 2011

Serena cruises past Sharapova at Stanford 2011

Serena Williams crushed Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of the Bank of the West Classci WTA tennis tournament in Stanford.

Williams showed she's still a contender as she overpowered Sharapova, who struggled throughout with her serve.

"I had a good start," Williams said. "You can't go in against the fifth-ranked player with your mind everywhere. You have to be serious. It's a great win for the hardcourt season."

"I'm a better player this month than I was last month," Williams said. "I've put in a lot of work and I hope it continues to pay off."

"I consider anybody I play to be an intense rivalry but we do have a good thing going," Williams said. "It's exciting and it's good for tennis."

"I've just been trying my hardest and practicing and trying to get back in the Top 100," Williams, who is currently at No.169 due to the inactivity, said. "I'm No.162 right now [sic]. It's a little crazy, but hopefully..."

Sharapova hasn't beaten Williams since the 2004 WTA Championships.

"It's sport. You win some, you lose some. You move on," Sharapova said in her press conference. "It certainly wasn't my day today. She was serving and returning quite powerfully, and I felt I was extremely late. I didn't have my timing today at all. Even when I had chances to change things around, I didn't do it.

"Serena has come back before. She's experienced enough to come back ready to play. She waited for the right time. When she comes back, she's ready."

"When I had chances to change things around I couldn't do it," Sharapova added. "Her biggest strength is her power and you don't see so much of that in the top 10. It really makes her dangerous."

Serena Williams next plays Sabine Lisicki, who upset Agnieszka Radwanska 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-2.

"I'm looking forward to the match," Lisicki said. "I love competing in the big matches. I have nothing to lose."

Marion Bartoli advances as injured Morita retires in Stanford

Marion Bartoli advances as injured Morita retires in Stanford

Marion Bartoli reached the semi-finals at the Bank of the West Classic as Ayumi Morita retired injured after dropping the first set.

Bartoli won the first set 6-1 when Morita retired with a right ankle injury.

It was a disappointing exit for Morita, who had beaten former world number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the first round and survived two match points as she rallied to beat Polish qualifier Urszula Radwanska in the second round on Thursday.

Bartoli next faces the winner of the match between Dominika Cibulkova and Marina Erakovic.
