Williams took control from the start of the match and had no problems to get a break she needed to win the opening set.
In the second set, Azarenka broke twice to lead 3-0 but Williams won six of the next seven games to seal the match.
During the match Vika hit 22 errors while Williams had 23. The difference came in the winners department as Serena had 35 to 15 from Azarenka.
"I'd been struggling with my serve in my first two rounds - I knew I could do better, so that was keeping me going," Williams said. "And everything was just a little better today. I knew I needed to play better today to win against Victoria, who has had a stellar year.
"I'll probably have to play her again though - I can feel it."
"I just hung in there," she said about the second set. "I was down two breaks but managed to stay pretty calm then, and throughout the whole match as well. I wasn't as emotional as I was in the first two rounds!"
Williams was asked in her post-match press conference how she feels about the season coming to an end.
"I can't wait to get to Australia," she replied, "I wish it started next month."
Williams was at a lost to explain her dominance over Azarenka.
"Maybe I'm doing the right things at the right time." Williams said. "I don't know what the edge is."
Azarenka admitted she struggled mentally against Williams but fancied one more match against her before the year was done.
"She's playing great tennis," Azarenka said.
"She's letting her tennis speak for itself. My biggest opponent is her right now. I'll do everything I can. I might still have a chance to play against her in this tournament [in the final], so we'll see."
Azarenka still has one more match to play as she faces Li Na on Friday. The winner of that match will qualify for the semifinals.
"I'll be sad for a little bit after today's match, but I'll bounce back strong for tomorrow - I'll take the best out of what I did today and transform into a better version for tomorrow," Azarenka said. "It's win or go home. I'll give everything I have to win because I want to stay a couple more days here and fight.
"I'm glad I have another opportunity to keep the dream alive."
