Azarenka wins Generali Ladies title in Linz
Azarenka wins Generali Ladies title in Linz
Victoria Azarenka defeated Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-4 to win the 2012 Generali Ladies Linz title.
Azarenka broke Goerges in the opening game and again at 5-3 to take the first set.
Vika won 12 consecutive points early in the second set to help build a 5-0 lead.
Goerges earned and converted her first break point when Azarenka was serving for the match at 5-1. She broke Azarenka again to make it 5-4.
"At 5-0 it felt like such a comfortable lead. I think I won seven games in a row at that point. But then Julia just went for her shots, and I kind of misjudged the situation," Azarenka said. "I felt like the match was already in my hands, but Julia is such an unpredictable player, and the momentum can turn around really quickly with her, and it did. I wasn't really expecting to have such a change."
Goerges was serving at 4-5, 30-all, when Azarenka squeaked out two points to seal the victory.
"I'm glad I stayed in the moment," Azarenka said. "I did the right things at that moment to finish the match and I'm very happy I managed to win today.
"I was coming to Linz for the first time and everywhere you go you try to win, and I'm really happy I could go all the way through this tournament. I'm happy to end the week with such a beautiful trophy and a smile on my face."
"Well, it was a tough day, but I saw I had the chance to stay with the No.1 player in the world, and even change the match from 5-0 down," the German commented. "But I got to two finals here, which I've never achieved in one week before, and even though I didn't win, I'm happy with my tournament."
Goerges took the court again shortly afterwards for the doubles final. She was playing with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, but lost 63 64 to Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke.
