Bartoli out of Guangzhou with gastrointestinal illness
Marion Bartoli, the top seed at the 2012 GRC Bank Guangzhou International Women's Open was forced to retire against Chang Kai-Chen in the first round because a gastrointestinal illness.
Chang, who was up 4-3 against Bartoli when the match ended, now faces Hsieh Su-Wei, who defeated Nina Bratchikova 75 63.
Zheng Jie was leading Chan Yung-Jan 5-3 when the world number 96th suffered from dizziness and retired.
The second seed will play Laura Robson in the second round.
Sorana Cirstea overcame Hu Yue-Yue 62 75 while Urszula Radwanska beat Melinda Czink, 76(1) 62 to advance.
Peng Shuai, Alizé Cornet, Olga Govortsova and Mathilde Johansson were also winners today.
