Sharapova reaches Olympic quarterfinals

Sharapova reaches Olympic quarterfinals

Maria Sharapova beat Sabine Lisicki 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the third round of the Olympic Games in London.

Sharapova produced a gutsy fightback to eliminate Lisicki and booked a quarter-final meeting with Kim Clijsters.

A tense first set went to a tie-break. Sharapova was not able to convert a set point as Lisicki produced some tremendous defence before going on the attack to snatch the lead.

The German broke Masha in the second set but the Russian broke back in typically tenacious fashion to level at 4-4.

Sharapova broke again as Lisicki served to stay in the set two games later.

The former world number 1 secured the crucial break late in the third set to finally win in two hours and 47 minutes.

"I was really happy I was able to beat her today. Obviously losing to her a few weeks ago, I was not really happy with the way that I played, so I wanted to change that result." Said Sharapova.

"Even though I didn't play my best tennis, I was really happy that I got through it and I stepped up when I had to," she added.
