Serena into Olympic quarterfinals after crushing Zvonareva
Serena Williams demolished Vera Zvonareva 6-1, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals at the Olympic Games in London.
Williams hit 12 aces and 32 winners to three for the Russian.
The American needed only 51 minutes to advance as she won the last 10 games with easy.
She hit three consecutive aces against Zvonareva and lost only seven points in six service games.
Williams broke serve in the opening game of the match. Vera won a game to get to 1-2, but after that it was all about the Wimbledon champion.
Serena broke her opponent twice more and sealed the set with a forehand winner after just 25 minutes.
Zvonareva had two break points in the opening game of the second set but Williams saved them.
Serena was leading 3-0 when Zvonareva threw her racket to the ground in frustration.
Williams got her first match point with a stunning service return. Zvonareva’s backhand found the net a point later and the American had won the match.
Williams has lost only 10 games through three rounds and is trying to win her first gold medal in singles as she has already won two gold medals in doubles.
